"The “tsarouhi” is a shoe with a history which begins during the time of Homer and extends to the period of the Ottoman Occupation of Greece (1453-1821). From 1821 onwards, the “tsarouhi” was established as part of the official Greek national costume and a symbol of the War of Independence. Today, the “tsarouhi” is worn by the Presidential Guard (Evzones), and Guards of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier located in front of the Hellenic Parliament. “Tsarouhia” are completely hand-made
