John Contrane, jazz saxophonist and composter. Working in the bebop and hard bop idioms early in his career, he helped pioneer the use of modes in jazz and later was at the forefront of free jazz. He is known for his work with trumpeter Miles Davis and pianist Thelonious Monk. He influenced innumerable musicians, and remains one of the most significant saxophonists in jazz history. His A Love Supreme is often listed amongst the greatest jazz albums of all time. R.I.P.
