Veiled woman in front of a door in Stone Town, Zanzibar, Tanzania

Back from a 3 weeks trip in Tanzania. I didn't do safari as 99% of the people that i met there! I traveled along the swahili coast, and in Zanzibar and Pemba islands. It was not very easy to takes pictures, and i had very different welcomes in villages, from hostile to friendly, with lot of variations around "money!". The country is really beautiful and there are many things to see, from german times to slavery trade, and muslim culture. On this picture, a very famous omani style door in…

See large on black Perhaps the most striking and spectacular impression of Stone Town for its first time visitor is the magnificent wooden doors serving as prosperous entrances to the grand buildings. The doors have become more or less synonym with the Swahili culture where they mainly are found in East Africa, Lamu and Mombasa (Kenya) and in Zanzibar. The doors in Zanzibar outnumber the doors, both in number and in grandness, found elsewhere along the coast, and thus being named…

Old door in Sabla house , Al Mudayrib, Oman

Al Mudayrib contains 10 old merchants houses called sablas built by rich Omani who earned money in East Africa. They are traditionally given over to public use or that of their extended family for events such as weddings. Their ornate doors are as with many others in Oman, are spectacularly carved, they come from India or Zanzibar. © Eric Lafforgue www.ericlafforgue.com

Revzen-i Menkuş

Revzen-i menkuş, meaning “fresco window,” is a specific form of Ottoman stained-glass application frequently seen in mosques, palaces and houses. Revzens are designed to host elaborate patterns of colored glass and the compositions are held in place by plaster frames made of pouf clay. The more complex designs are installed within the interiors of buildings, because of the need to preserve their fine plaster frames. The works that can be seen from the outside named “exteriors,” are produced…

MY ULTIMATE GUIDE TO EXPLORING STONE TOWN, ZANZIBAR — Spirited Pursuit

If ever you find yourself in Zanzibar, Stone Town is likely where you'll start. And while some travelers choose to skip spending much time here in favor for Zanzibar's more well known and gorgeous beaches (I made the same mistake the first time I visited a few years ago), I highly recommend you spend at least two days exploring this beautifully enchanting old town.
