Monemvasia (Greek for "single entrance"), Peloponnese, Greece. The island is united to mainland by a short causeway. The island is known as the "Gibraltar of the East.

The town's name derives from two Greek words, mone and emvasia, meaning "single entrance". Monemvasia's nickname is the Gibraltar of the East or The Rock.
