Where you see a chimney in Santorini, a tomato factory used to operate there. At the beginning of 20th century, there were 13 tomato factories on the island producing tomato paste. At that time, the cherry tomato and the wine were the main products of Santorini and thus the backbone of the local economy. But then, after the big earthquake in July 1956, many people abandoned the island and the factories closed or moved to the mainland.

Katsouni is the cucumber of Santorini. It’s bigger than the common cucumber and has a thicker skin and more seeds. If not harvested on time, it becomes sweet and has a melon taste!
