Tommie Smith and John Carlos raise their fists in a gesture of solidarity, at the 1968, Mexico Olympic Games, a silent protest against the continued Racial Discrimination of Black People in the US. All three athletes wore human rights badges, opposed to racism in sport, on their jackets. Smith and Carlos were expelled from the games. The badge was enough to end Norman's career. He returned home to Australia suffering unofficial sanction and ridicule. He never ran in the Olympics again.
