Archaeologists at Amphipolis led by Katerina Peristeri managed to reveal the upper part of the lintel the now famous Kasta Mound sphinxes step on. As with the sphinxes, the lintel is also marble, covered in fresco imitating an Ionic architrave, which bears decoration in red, blue and black. Straight under the Ionic architrave, two Ionic pillar capitals belonging to the doorjambs, also frescoed and decorated in the same colours, have been revealed.

Sphinx's head found in Amphipolis!The head was discovered whole with minimum fractures on the nose and it fits the eastern sphinx's torso,to which it was inserted.In the lower part of the throat,one can see the insertion incision.It has curly hair with traces of red,falling onto its left shoulder.It was found in a 15 cm depth inside a marble threshold.It is a sculpture of exquisite art,leaving archaeologists in awe.Fractures of the sphinx's wings have also been located in the area.

Today, the first wall sealing the front of the Amphipolis Caryatids was removed and the continuity of the robes of the two sculptures was revealed. The robes bear exceptionally crafted folds. The caryatids, from the outside, appear to slightly lift their chitons with the corresponding hand.

The beautiful blue of Amphipolis.Azurite the raw material for the magnificent blue background in the Amphipolis mosaic depicting the abduction of Persephone came from the nearby mines of Alistrati.The unknown-to-most Alistrati mines, in Serres prefecture, are a mere 20 kilometers from Amphipolis, which seem to have provided more than filling the coffers of Macedonian kings. The mineral is still visible in the Alistrati caves as part of natural formations.
