British PM WC (L) and Archbishop Damaskinos (R) in 1945. Archbishop of Athens during German occupation, Damaskinos wrote a famous open letter against the deportation of Greek Jews. He also had false baptismal certificates issued to them. When the German SS commander told him he'd have him shot, Damaskinos, alluding to Turkish crimes, replied 'The priests of Greece are hanged, not shot, please respect the tradition'. Photo by D.
