The tradition of the winemaking art is still preserved today on Mount Athos in a robust level. There are certain places, the so-called vagenaria, that are usually underground, where the wine is produced and maintained in large oak barrels. In the Karakallou monastery on Mt Athos - Greece the production doesn’t exceed the five tones. Deep purple in color, this dry red table wine bears a strong flavor of fresh red fruits and accompanies ideally grilled meat and pasta with red sauce.

Aivalis Estate from Nemea, Peleponnese, mostly known for its outstanding and dense Agiorgitiko wines. This is a Sauvignon Blanc from vineyards at an altitude of 800 metres (2625 feet). The wine was made by Sotiris, the son of Christos Aivalis. I am amazed how different the character is. Where Christos aims for full body and weight, Sotiris goes for pure elegance. Light as feathers, but with lots of finesse. The name 'Wild Gooses' nails it.

White From Black (Aspro apo Mavro) Chrisohoou Estate: Tasted at Kazakos Wine Dinner @ Orizontes restaurant. Although i didn't like the couple of blanc de noirs I've tried before, this is a strongly recommended wine. Made by the main red grape of northern Greece (Xynomavro) this dry white has a complex nose of citrus, lemon and orange, and an excellent acidity and lasting. Nice pairing with (something like) sushi

2009 Antonopoulos Vineyards Chardonnay ANAX. Clear medium gold. Decanted for one hour. Nose of medium intensity, presenting peach & apricot, hints of jasmine and a lot of the oak aromas expected (vanilla, nuts & honey). Dry palate of medium acidity, full bodied and the same oak aromas (though not dominating). Medium lasting. Overall a great Greek Chard. Could have been an exceptional wine if it had a little less alcohol (15%) and a bit longer finish. Paired with cuttlefish risotto. 88…

2005 Hatzidakis Winery Santorini Assyrtiko Nykteri. I've tried this wine in its youth in 2006, and was curious to see its development. Clean medium golden. Medium intensity nose, with dominant minerality and hints of citrus, orange zest and some green apple. Full bodied (due to high alcohol of 15%) with medium+ acidity, medium lasting and same aromas of stone and some smoke. Very good but i was expecting a bit more, especially in terms of acidity and finish. 88 points

Tsolis Estate, "Ftelia" Cabernet Sauvignon 2005. An excelent wine from southwest Peloponissos. Very concetrated and complex nose, reminding new world wines, but in a more elegant way. Cheries, ink, leather and some oak. Same way in the palate with well integrated tannins, and a delicious long aftertaste. A recomented wine, which paired nice with Libanese dishes.

Unfortunately i couldn't afford 80 euros for a glass of this rare AEN Metaxa, but i managed to take of the gold plated cork, and take a sniff. Only one word : Magical! For the history: It is a limited edition blend, launched to celebrate the 120th anniversary of Metaxa Greek brandy. It is composed of blends aged between 20 and 80 years and is said to be the oldest product ever released by Metaxa. Packaged in crystal de Sevres, only 1.888 bottles were available worldwide.
