Georg von Peschke | A Skyros-Style Country House near Athens

On this site are collected images and documents related to the art and career of Georg von Peschke (1900-1959). Peschke lived and worked in Greece as a painter, an archaeological illustrator, and architect. He is the focus of an exhibit at Franklin & Marshall College and Bryn Mawr College in 2012, "Colors of Greece: The Art and Archaeology of Georg von Peschke," which is presented in the Exhibits section of this site. Νυφιάτικη ενδυμασία Αγίας Αννας Εύβοιας Η φορεσιά -στην τοπική ορολογία- ονομάζεται το καλό σιγκούνι. Κύριο χαρακτηριστικό της είναι τα επάλληλα πουκάμισα. Τα κεντήματα στο μεγάλο πουκάμισο, υποδηλώνουν την ηλικία και την οικογενειακή κατάσταση της έγγαμης γυναίκας. Σε ένα από τα πουκάμισα ή σε ειδικό μπούστο ράβονται οι μάνικες, συνήθως μεταξωτές λευκές, με κεντήματα ή δαντέλες. Το σιγκούνι είναι λευκό με μαύρα μεταξωτά σιρίτια και πρωτοφοριέται την ημέρα του γάμου. Colors of Greece: The Art and Archaeology of Georg von Peschke These paintings are some of the works of the painter and illustrator Georg von Peschke (1900-1959). Peschke was born in the Austro-Hungarian Empire (present-day Croatia), and in the 1920s moved to Greece, where he met his wife, Faltaina, a native of Skyros (Skyros became a frequent subject of his art). His paintings, drawings, and prints were featured in several exhibitions in Athens in the 1920s and 1930s, and he was a…
