HAPPY NEW YEAR!! On December 31, 1904, the first New Year’s Eve celebration was held in Times Square. It was organized by the owners of the NY Times newspaper to celebrate their move to the newly-completed Times Tower at One Times Square. The event was marked with rooftop fireworks, but the organizers wanted something bigger and better. In 1907, they constructed a lit ball that they lowered from the flagpole at One Times Square, a tradition that stands today.
