Just for Fun
HAPPY NEW YEAR!! On December 31, 1904, the first New Year’s Eve celebration was held in Times Square. It was organized by the owners of the NY Times newspaper to celebrate their move to the newly-completed Times Tower at One Times Square. The event was marked with rooftop fireworks, but the organizers wanted something bigger and better. In 1907, they constructed a lit ball that they lowered from the flagpole at One Times Square, a tradition that stands today.
Christmas Eve 1931, the nation mired in Great Depression, a group of construction workers erected a 20' tree on a muddy site of what would become 1 of the city's greatest architectural & commercial monuments. Despite grim faces, men had cause to celebrate. Unlike most colleagues, they were about to get paid. (Notice the wooden crate at the foot of the tree & the clerk behind it dispensing checks) 2yrs later, a Rockefeller Center publicist organized the 1st official tree-lighting ceremony.
