Sunburst Zejwa Rug, Caucasus, 19th Century. - 3'-4" x 4'-6". This is an Antique Sunburst Zejwa. In the trade it is common to call this type of rug a Kazak but that is a misnomer. The exception to this is in the corrosive brown field where the has had expert repair. This is a very pretty rug with a bold powerful design. The border & some of the field icons are clearly influenced by Sejshour Kuba rugs. It is my feeling that this sunburst design is derivative of sixteenth century blossom carpets.

Caucasian Baku, 4ft 2in x 5ft 2in, 3rd Quarter, 19th Century. Art-level rugs from the numerous subgroups of the Caucasus Mountains often feature age-old graphic motifs that are deeply evocative in nature. This superbly crafted antique Caucasian Baku rug woven on the shores of the Caspian Sea reinvents the serrated Ashik motif (found in pottery from the same region as early as 3000 B.C.) again and again across its various color fields.
BAKU, Southeast Caucasian, 4ft 2in x 4ft 10in, Circa 1875. A dynamic collector’s piece, this antique rug offers a rendition of the diagonal Persian carpet design seen throughout the Caucasus region thought to have been inspired by the lofty mountainsides of this range. In this piece gold motifs dominate the pattern in left leaning rows. This would be the orientation of the weaver to the Caucasian slopes near which the city of Baku is situated.
