The Stabbed Icon of Panagia Esfagmeni at Vatopaidi Monastery *** It is told of this 14th century icon that it was damaged by the knife of a malcontent deacon-monk.From the wound which he inflicted, blood flowed and the face of the Virgin is said to have turned pale. The deacon was immediately blinded and fell to the ground, beating himself and driven out of his senses. He remained in this state for three years until Theotokos cured him, but his sacrilegious hand stayed black for ever.

On July the Icon of the Virgin “Galaktotrophousa” (Γαλακτοτροφουσα, meaning “the Milk-Giver”) is celebrated. The Icon shows the Mother of God breast-feeding Christ. The introduction, "It is truly meet..." was, according to tradition, revealed by the Archangel Gabriel to a monk on Mount Athos.
