On 11 May 1848, the 9.15am express from Paddington to Bristol with four carriages and a van hauled by broad gauge Iron Duke class loco 'Great Britain' is said to have completed the 53 miles to Didcot in a record time of 47½ minutes, averaging 67mph with a maximum around 77mph on the journey. The train was driven by J Michael Almond with fireman Richard Denham. This photo shows 'Great Britain' some years later, after rebuild in 1870 with a new boiler.
