British PM WC (L) and Archbishop Damaskinos (R) in 1945. Archbishop of Athens during German occupation, Damaskinos is mostly known for his open letter against the deportation of Greek Jews and for issuing false baptismal certificates which saved thousands of lives. When the German commander threatened his execution by firing squad, he replied 'It's customary for prelates of the Greek Orthodox Church to be hanged, not shot. Please respect the convention'.
