Be Careful What You Wish For | History Today    Communist fighters or sympathisers imprisoned by the Greek government at Salonika during the Greek Civil War (1946-49) await a visit by a United Nations team investigating prison living conditions in March 1947. They hold up placards spelling out in French the message ‘The British Must Go’, referring to the 16,000 British troops stationed in Greece.

Archbishop of Athens during German occupation,  Damaskinos is mostly known for his open letter against the deportation of Greek Jews and for issuing false baptismal certificates which saved thousands of lives. When the German commander threatened his execution by firing squad, he replied 'It's customary for prelates of the Greek Orthodox Church to be hanged, not shot. Please respect the convention'.
