Greek (Ionian Islands), dated 1867.Tempera and gold on gesso on wood  Saint Menas was a Martyr under Diocletian, around 295. He was a Christian and an Egyptian by birth and served in the Roman army but he retired to the mountains in solitude, to pray.  Tortured and beheaded, his body was brought to Egypt and the fame of miracles wrought by his relics made thousands of pilgrims visiting the grave in the desert of Mareotis between Alexandria and the valley of Natron
