The Sumerians were the first known people to settle in Mesopotamia over 7,000 years ago, between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers (modern day Iraq). Sumer was often called the cradle of civilization. Minoan script. Linear A is what archaeologists call the undeciphered written language of the Minoans. It was used in central and southern Crete. Creton hieroglyphic was used in the north of Crete.Invented around 1800BC this is Europe's first known writing using symbols instead of pictures.

Golden signet rings from  Minoan Crete (16th-13th cent.BC) . You can see scenes of a sort of a divine romance. The protagonist is a female figure, undoubtedly a goddess, who appears as being seduced by a figure with the help of giant fennel (Ferula sp.) branches . The upmost seal shows a depiction of love prototypical to later Greek art : there is a tiny figure floating in-between the two main ones. In Classic Greek art, this exactly how they depict Eros .
