Red Cloud 1822-1909  Perhaps one of the most capable warriors from the Oglala Lakota (Sioux) tribesmen ever faced by the US military, Makhpiya Luta, his Sioux name, led his people in what is known as Red Cloud’s War. This battle was for the rights to the area known as Powder River Country in Northern Wyoming and Southern Montana. Eventually he led his people during their time on reservation.

Tȟatȟáŋka Íyotake (Sitting Bull)

SITTING BULL was a beloved medicine man and chief of the Sioux Indian Tribe. Chief Sitting Bull was born in about 1837 in what is now North Dakota. He was the son of Sioux chief Jumping Bull.

These are some of the many symbols Sioux tribes used to depict their adventures and lives. Many times these were either drawn or written on skin pelts and walls to record things.

Although the meanings of these symbols may vary from tribe to tribe it would be a great way to show students symbols that Native Americans used and then discuss some of the symbols we use in every day life. (Ex: road symbols/signs) RJT
