Greek Traditions

Being a trained traditional dancer myself, I would like to share my love for Greek traditions. That will include costumes, food, dances. I hope people will enjoy getting to know us.

The greek Vasilopita. A cake we cut as soon as the New Year enters. The lord of the house does the sign of the cross three times, cuts a piece for Jesus, one for Santa, one for the house and one for every member of the family. The person who finds the lucky coin in his piece, is going to be lucky for the entire year.

" Peek - a - boo" by Nicolaos Gyzis, 19th century. Why this painting is on a " Greek Traditions" board?? Because our families are our greatest, oldest and most valuable tradition. And this is a lovely family painting

The greek March bracelet. We wear this on the 1st of March to prevent getting burned by the Sun. This custom has its roots in ancient times, where the mysts of Elefsinian mysteries would put a red/white string bracelet around their right wrist and left ankle. The custom today is common to many nations of the Balkans
