A woman's waistcoat / sleeveless coat, part of festive attire. Made of dark red heavily fulled woven wool cloth; hand stitched. Falls just below the knee. Made of twenty-two separate panels, producing a very flared garment. A deep, U-shaped neckline, decorated with extensive black, blue, and red wool braiding, with smaller areas of polychrome couched embroidery. A woman's coat, festive wear; sleeveless, waisted at the back. Ground fabric made from black twill woven wool cloth; heavily fulled. Two panels either side of centre front opening; fourteen panels at back, creating a very flared and heavy garment. Elaborate couched wool braiding at square-shaped neckline; predominantly maroon, with blue, green, orange and black woollen yarns and yellow, green and blue cotton (?) threads. Hello all, Today I will talk about one of the most complicated costumes of Greece, that of the Karagounai. The Karagouni are an ethnic group which inhabit the lowlands of western Thessaly, just east of the Pindus mountains. They mostly inhabit villages in the area surrounding the cities of Trikala, Karditsa, Sofades and Palamas. Some villages in the area are still inhabited solely by Karagouni.
