Chickweed (Stellaria media) grows in slightly disturbed places, such as your garden, fallow fields, the edge of pathways and trails, or under greenhouse benches. You probably will not find very much of it near any occupied hen house though, because chicks love it! However, once you learn why, you may decide to grow chickweed for chickens! If you have chickens, the unfortunate reality is that at some point, they will die. But what happens if one dies young, or several birds die in succession? Maybe you suspected it was an illness that ultimately brought your beloved birds demise. Wouldn’t it be nice to know what caused your loss(es) to prevent them in the future? Consider sending the bird to your local laboratory for a necropsy, or chicken autopsy, which is a cause of death report. #backyardfarm #farm #raisingchickens Homesteading Nice, Raising, Livestock, Animal Disease, Backyard Farming

Crooked toes on chicks can range from mildly cosmetic to debilitating. Fortunately, despite how significant it may seem, it is a relatively quick and easy fix if corrected promptly. Young, just hatched birds have high success rates in as little as 24 hours. We recently had to fix a severe case in a just hatched peafowl, which prompted this post. Today, was one of my first novice beekeeper tests. “Hive 16-04” has had a rough go. It was a small swarm collected in a rain/snowstorm, in the late afternoon. After collecting it, I rushed home to hive them but they weren’t placed until after dark. The next 3 days were filled with blizzards & below-freezing nights. When I finally inspected the hive, about half of the bees were dead. I removed the carnage & decided to let things play out on their own. #bees #beehive #backyardfarm Homesteading Play
