Ancient horse breeds

India is an ancient, beautiful country filled with culture and history. It also has its share of Indian horse breeds, many of which are completely native, others which have been influenced by other breeds. Some of the following are considered wholly or partly of Indian origin, and may have complex or obscure histories that means they are not entirely Indian, but here is a list of the most well known Indian horse breeds.

Horses have been domesticated for thousands of years, and in that time some horse breeds have developed extraordinary traits.

ARDENNES or Ardennais stallion RUBIS. The Ardennes or Ardennais is one of the oldest breeds of draft horse, and originates from the Ardennes area in Belgium, Luxembourg and France, and could be a direct descendant of the prehistoric Solutre horse. As horses evolved, they increased in size and lost all but one of their toes on each foot. The earliest horse was the dawn horse (Hyracotherium or Eohippus).
