My Last Look at the Denver Zephyr -- 3 Photos

Amtrak's Denver Zephyr just departed Chicago Union Station for its overnight run with an early Amtrak rainbow of cars and locos on October 14, 1972. The lead E8A (BN 9934) was built as CB&Q 9941B and became AMTK 333. Note the strange spark arestors. After taking the two coming shots I hustled across Roosevelt Road to take the going away shot. This day the DZ had two round-end observation dome cars looking like they were Twin City Zephyr cars. BN and then Amtrak kept the CB&Q's Denver Zephyr…

The Observation Lounge at the back of the train was the lounge for sleeping car passengers on the original California Zephyr. The stairway leads to the vista-dome, which was one of two domes reserved for sleeping car passengers. A small bar-lounge is beneath the dome.
