Digital Revolution

The Digital Revolution, as mentioned on page 129 of the textbook, is when digital tools became easier to use and desktop publishing became mainstream among the public. The creation of sophisticated software jumpstarted digital media and allowed for newspapers to add on more graphics, maps, and polls. As my example showcases, the digital revolution quickly became internet biased, creating a larger pool of people to reach than print media could keep up with.

Scientific, Technical, and Medical (STM) publishing is big business. It generates $19 billion in revenue per year, the majority of which is earned by a few powerful publishers who enjoy profit margins of up to 40 percent. Inflated subscriptions sold to academic libraries keep them moving ahead because the librarians feel they have no choice but to buy. These companies add little value to the actual publishing product but they are entrenched.
