Dora maar

Widely known as Picasso’s muse and lover, a new exhibition at Tate Modern proves that Dora Maar was an exceptional artist and photographer in her own right

This spooky photomontage by Dora Maar was made by sandwiching together two negatives and printing them as one image. It's thought that Maar may have created this work to advertise an anti-ageing cream in 1936 — the title 'Les années vous guettent' translates as 'The years are waiting for you.'

This haunting show, in the cool gallery spaces high above the city that Dora Maar knew so well, makes it clear that she was indeed a star, a leading figure in Surrealist photo-montage of the mid-1930s.
