Immune cells, such as macrophages, B lymphocytes, T lymphocytes and mast cells produce cytokines. Cytokines are small proteins that are used to communicate with other cells through cell surface receptors. Cytokines include chemokines, interferons, interleukins, lymphokines, and tumor necrosis factors (TNF). These proteins modulate the balance between the humoral and cell-based immune responses, and they regulate the maturation, growth, and responsiveness of particular cell populations.
