Sublime … the Hubble telescope has revealed light-filled dust clouds that are light years across.

From a spacesuited everyman to a golden-legged invader, the lunar images were astonishingly poetic works of art that captured humanity evolving before our very eyes. Can they ever be surpassed?

Arp 87 and the two spiral galaxies NGC 3808 and NGC 3808A, are in an early state of merging. Already a bridge between them has formed. A polar ring around NGC 3808A attests to a former fusion of galaxies. Constellation: Leo. Distance: 300 million light-years. Visual magnitude: 14.1. Type: Sc D.

Edited ESO image of the spiral galaxy NGC 1097. Original caption: It is an almost-true colour composite based on images made with the multi-mode VIMOS instrument on the 8.2-m Melipal (Unit Telescope 3) of ESO's Very Large Telescope. Exposures were taken in three different wavebands which were associated to a given colour : R-band (centred around 652 nm; red), V (540 nm; green) and B (456 nm; blue). The images were taken on the night of December 9 to 10, 2004 in the presence of the President…

Exoplanet HD189733b is a huge gas giant which orbits close to its host star. It's approximately 63 light-years from Earth. It is also a deep azure colour, probably the result of silicate (glass) rain in the atmosphere, which scatters blue light.

Astronomers have found an azure blue planet, the first time they've determined the actual color of a planet outside our solar system, NASA said Thursday.

A prototypical open cluster, it spans about 15 light-years and holds some 500 stars. These luminaries will disperse over the next few hundred million years. NASA/ESA and AURA/Caltech
