With a new school year fast approaching, many Reception teachers will soon be embarking on phase 2 of the Letters and Sounds programme. Here, I aim to give an overview of what phonics actually is and provide some tried and tested tips for teaching early word reading.

Need to practise blending in a fun, physical way? Try 'Bouncy Blending'! Lay out how ever many hoops you need for the number if sounds. Put one sound next to each hoop in order. Then ask a child to bounce into each hoop and shout the sounds.
