The Ansonia Hotel, NYC — Designed by Paul E. Duboy & erected between 1899 & 1904, it was the first hotel in New York to have air- conditioning. From 1968 through 1974, the iconic gay Continental Baths were located in the basement (Bette Midler performed there!). In 1977, that space became Plato's Retreat, the infamous heterosexual swingers' club.
