The bald uakari (Cacajao calvus) is a species of New World monkey which is the ancestor of the babookari. The uakari was readily able to adapt to life on the Amazon Prairie following the loss of the Amazon Rainforest. Although an arboreal animal, it spends a lot of time on the forest floor. More importantly, it already has a complex social system, which is important for life on the grasslands. As the trees thinned out, uakaris adapted their social system and began to live in larger groups…

This handsome guy lives in the Peruvian Amazon, where we visited him and many of his friends of all varieties. He's small and very friendly, climbing up on our shoulders and wanting to be held and fed. The bright red facial skin is a sign of good health and allows for the determination of a healthy mate.
