In April, five months after its troops had subdued the Italians, the glory that was Greece failed. Axis forces, mostly German, rushed in from Romania and Bulgaria. The Greeks, bolstered by 58,000 British soldiers, fought bravely again. But by late May the Nazi flag was hoisted over the Acropolis.

An extraordinary photograph: While Gen Georgios Tsolakoglou (sitting, with glasses) signs the surrender of Greece to German forces, SS-Obergruppenführer Sepp Dietrich is obviously enjoying a joke (?) with two Greek staff officers, who should have known better than fraternizing so openly with the enemy. Postwar, Tsolagoglou was sentenced to death for signing the surrender without authorization and collaborating with the enemy. He died in prison in 1948.
