Cretan partisans pose for a photograph following the Axis invasion of the island. For the first time during war, German forces faced in Crete a valiant resistance from the local civilian population when they invaded in May 1941. Civilians on Crete, men, women & even children, picked off Axis paratroopers or attacked them with knives, axes, scythes, clubs or even bare hands in a show of resistance that would become legendary.

Greek partisans who fought German invaders during the battle of Crete (May I visited a N.Greek village memorial for all the boys and men 11 years and older shot by the Germans in WWII for sabotage activities. Greeks were great fighters.
