In Redeemed Belgium, the 12/14/1918 Norman Rockwell Literary Digest cover
“In Redeemed Belgium” by Norman Rockwell, 1918 | Appeared on the cover of The Literary Digest published Dec. 14, 1918. An alternate title for this work is "Soldier Dining in European Home". The scene shows Christmas dinner in 1918, in Oct. 1918, Germany requested a ceasefire and its allies rapidly followed. Though WWI was not officially over until 7 months later, an air of peaceful optimism permeated the American consciousness. Norman Rockwell reflected this optimism in this picture.
My Mother, the 12/19/1918 Norman Rockwell Life Magazine cover
“My Mother” by Norman Rockwell, 1918 | Appeared on the cover of Life Magazine published Dec. 19, 1918. Alternate title for this is "Soldier with French Woman". The days and months immediately after WW1 must have felt almost heavenly to both soldiers and civilians alike. Here we see a young American soldier and an older French woman. Implied in this is a relationship between them. Perhaps the woman's family has taken the soldier under their wing while he's still stationed in France.

War Hero Job Hunting, the 3/1/1919 Norman Rockwell Collier's Cover
“War Hero Job Hunting” by Norman Rockwell, 1919| Appeared on Collier's on Mar. 1, 1919. This was the 1st cover by Rockwell to appear on Collier's and the 1st of 4 in all. WW1 wasn't officially over, yet a state of truce had been declared, soldiers had started returning home. More in those days weren't content to rest on their laurels than today. Both the soldier and his family acknowledge that it's time for him to go out and find a job. It's time for him to contribute to his family once more.
