Advice to Little Girls by Mark Twain: You should ever bear in mind that it is to your kind parents that you are indebted for your food, and for the privilege of staying home from school when you let on that you are sick. Therefore you ought to respect their little prejudices, and humor their little whims, and put up with their little foibles until they get to crowding you too much. THE PECULIAR by Stephan Bachmann has phenomanal world building - almost on par with Philip Pullman. A portal inexplicably opens between the human and faery worlds, creating wars and, ultimately, a new lower class as most of the faeries are relegated to living in the slums of this Victorian Era-esque England. However, the lowest of the low are the Peculiar - the offspring of faeries and humans. They are also the key to opening the portal between worlds again and allowing the fay to return home. THE ROAR by Emma Clayton. Previous Pinner writes "Stunning! HUNGER GAMES meets THE GOLDEN COMPASS and completely appropriate for readers you think are too young for Collins's and Pullman's books. Clayton's post-apocalyptic dystopian world building is brilliant and her characters are unforgettable. The sequel, THE WHISPER is out now."
