As if just landing in a fierce headwind, her great wings still aloft, her body twisting slightly as if to maintain its balance, while the sheer chiton, heavy with sea spray, both clinging and billowing dramatically : The Winged Nike of Samothrace, a presence invoking a spirit of celebration and commemorating the " arête " (physical and moral excellence) of gods and men
