The tzouras was a favorite instrument of the rebetes in rebetiko music. For several years it was not as popular, but it has had a renaissance in the past few years. Almost all bouzouki luthiers now are making tzourades, and it is a very popular instrument today. It is tuned exactly like the bouzouki but with a twangier sound. The style of playing is like old style bouzouki in that the musician periodically picks all the strings as a sort of drone as he plays the melody on a higher string.
