A truck loaded with thousands of copies of Roget's Thesaurus crashed yesterday losing its entire load. Witnesses were stunned, startled, aghast, taken aback, stupefied, confused, shocked, rattled, paralysed, dazed, bewildered, mixed up, surprised, awed, dumbfounded, nonplussed, flabbergasted, astounded, amazed, confounded, astonished, overwhelmed, horrified, numbed, speechless, and perplexed. Me: My new favorite word in 'nonplussed'.
These look like record books that contain hand-written notes, which can be found in courthouses in every county in the U.S. Anyone in search of records will realize the value of penmanship, which used to be taught in every school. And record books like these were still in use in the late 1970s, when I worked in Juvenile Court in Sedgwick County, Kansas. I made notes in them.
