A truly stunning photograph of #Iraqi Marsh Arabs, whose #culture, #environment and #history is unique. #MarshArab history describes the beginnings of the world, as being created through swirls of mist expanding over the Marsh lands. Their history and way of life, has been documented by people like Wilfred Thesiger and Gavin Young wrote the remarkable "Return to the Marshes", after his experiences with #Iraq's #MarshArabs in the 1950's.

Cartonnage of Nespanetjerenpere. This Egyptian coffin dates to the Third Intermediate Period (ca. 945-718 BC), and is reportedly from Thebes. Cartonnage, a substance made of cloth or papyrus mixed with plaster and water, was used during the Third Intermediate Period to make an innermost case for the mummified body. The mummy was inserted and the covering was then painted with funerary scenes and inscriptions and placed in one or more coffins, which had been decorated in much the same way.

Ca. 4000 year old pendants to protect people from drowning? Shown here are two golden ‘Nile catfish’ pendants from Egypt’s Middle Kingdom. The Walters provides the following description for the first example: This fish pendant represents a Synodontis Batensoda, more commonly known as the Nile catfish, a species of fish named for its black belly. Often worn at the end of a plait of hair, amulets like this one were used by children and young women to protect against drowning.
