“Saint Cecilia”, 1625-27, Simon Vouet. Happy Saint Cecilia day! (11/22)

REVERIE

tierradentro: ““Saint Cecilia”, 1625-27, Simon Vouet. Happy Saint Cecilia day! (11/22) ”

Saint Cecilia (1620-5). Pietro da Cortona (Italian, 1596-1669). Oil on canvas. National Gallery, London. Saint Cecilia was an early Christian Martyr and holds the palm of martyrdom. She is the patron saint of music, and the portable organ seen on the left is her attribute. The angel on the right holds a harp. This painting was once attributed to Domenichino and has more recently been described as a work of the Roman School. It is, however, an original work by Cortona.

In this project, students are asked to take a famous piece of art and increases its size by a scale factor of at least three. The extra challenge is that each piece of art is divided into 2-4 pieces and each student only gets a portion of the original. The more accurate their measurements, the better it will match up with the pieces their teammates are creating.

High school art project idea. Maybe use paint swatches cut into squares and glue into mosaic?

L.Y.M.I.

LMAO! I really detest acronyms like that, and LYMI for sure, but this little something had me laughing on a day when I really needed it. I arrived in Waterloo ready to ride and take on the day, only to discover that my bike had been "tagged" with red permanent marker (no photo, sorry) AND I had a flat tire. Do you think these two incidents are related? I walked my bike unsuccessfully through town only to discover that the air valve will not fit the valve on the air pump at the Auto Shop. (I…

Colorful Dense Text Lettering. Students can write their name repeatedly or an encouraging phrase: "we are mustang strong" or something like that.

Lettering Waves

My inspiration for this project came from the book, Hand Lettering, by Marci Donley & DeAnn Singh. The authors call this “Writing Between the Lines”, but we’ve renamed it “Lettering Waves” since we live in a surfing community where waves are a pretty big deal! I taught this lettering style to my middle schoolers and …
