Alice B. Toklas and Gertrude Stein, who held court with writers at their Montparnasse home. The couple lived this way for 39 years, American "expats" holding salons with Paris' greatest artists and writers, until Stein passed away in 1946. Toklas died about 20 years later, at 89. The women are buried next to one another at the Pere Lachaise cemetary in Paris.
