Sacramental Tiara (for an Armenian bishop or abbot). From western Armenia (Anatolia), dated Partly gilt silver. Made by an Armenian silversmith. (Armenian Museum of France).

Behold the treasure binding: gold and gems stuck to a medieval book that is over 1100 years old. The book, which contains the Gospels, was made for an emperor by two monks in the year 870. Very few books were decorated like this and you can see why: they cost a fortune. From some of them gems were pried loose, which is also no surprise.

'The Codex Aureus of St. Emmeram' -- Dated 870 -- Illuminated Gospel Book -- Gold cover with precious gemstones, sapphires, emeralds, & pearls -- An important example of Carolingian art, as well of one of very few surviving treasure bindings of this date.
