Shocked by the immorality in Rome, 14-year-old Benedict (5th cent Nursia, Italy) became a monk. He lived in a cave for 3 years, fighting all temptations and conquering them. So many disciples came, he divided them into 12 groups and left for Mount Cassino. There he founded a monastery whose rules were based on Eastern wilderness-dwellers and Monk John Cassian the Roman. This later became known as "Benedictine monasticism." (Mar 14; 1453 painting by Andrea Mantegna, Milan)
