Whitney Phoenix Single Shot Breechloading Rifle
GUN OF THE DAY – Whitney Phoenix Rifle The Whitney Arms Company of New Haven, CT decided to compete with Remington and our GOTD was part of that extended rivalry from 1867 to 1881. The Whitney Phoenix was a single shot that resembled the Remington rolling block, but the Phoenix had a hinged breechblock that flipped up to load. While offered in Sporting rifle, carbine and shotgun versions, as well as related military variations, our example is a civilian .40-70 rifle.
