Massacres at Chios, Greek Families Awaiting Death or Slavery by Eugene Delacroix, 1824, currently at the Louvre.  The Massacres at Chios were the suppression of a war of independence fought by the Greeks against the Turks.  Greece had been under occupation for nearly four centuries before revolting against the Ottoman Empire in 1821.  The Sultan sent a fleet to destroy the island of Chios.  This included two weeks of murder, torture and rape. All the villages were burned.
