Fort Ross is located some 80 miles north of San Francisco The fort was established in 1812 by Russians. The structure seen in the distance of this photo is a chapel built by the Eastern Orthodox Christian settlers at Fort Ross in the early 1820's. It was dedicated to St. Nicholas and, though never officially consecrated as a church, was the first Orthodox structure of its kind established in the New World south of Alaska.
