What do you hope readers take from BENT? TLK: A sense of chaos, because that is exactly how gender disorientation feels... why should gender and the swapping of it be written about in some catalogued order when the whole process is anything but? I hope they laugh, and I hope they might just cut other transgendered people some slack in the future, because crossing the gender line is the most outrageous and courageous thing any person can do.

Q: Do you have any advice for loved ones of transgendered people? TLK: Try to understand what it’s like to live a lie – try it out on yourself. #bent #terilouisekelly http://www.open-bks.com/library/moderns/bent/about-book.html

Q: Do you have any advice for young transgendered people? TLK: Believe in yourself, don’t take advice you’re given, even by medical professionals, as gospel – don’t buy into the advertised role of male or female – if you want to straddle the line, do so, and don’t let anyone push you into one camp or another simply to appease their own idea of gender. #bent #terilouisekelly http://www.open-bks.com/library/moderns/bent/about-book.html

Q: What is the best aspect of being a transgendered person? TLK: Confusion – the way in which people get confused, like they’re unsure quite what you are, so whereas before, when you started off, it was you that got flustered, there comes a point (if you’re lucky) where it’s them flustered, groping for pronouns or apologizing – which is funny, some kind of pay back. #bent #terilouisekelly http://www.open-bks.com/library/moderns/bent/about-book.html

Q: What is the most difficult aspect of being a transgendered person? TLK: Loss, the loss of employment (if that occurs), the loss of your past, loss of family and friends (when that happens), having to learn to talk about the past in a neutral way, as if you existed but on a very subliminal level: humiliation, the way people stare at you, abuse you, ignore you, laugh at you – because they’re still in the herd and you’ve leaped clean out of the corral.

Q: What is your interpretation of the word BENT? TLK: Non-linear, curved, warped, buckled, distressed, like having bleached genes and curdled DNA, not conforming to a stereotype whether that stereotype is high street fashion, music or gender. #bent #terilouisekelly http://www.open-bks.com/library/moderns/bent/about-book.html

Q: Who is Teri Louise Kelly? TLK: Teri Louise Kelly is the person I became after I stopped being someone else; and although that someone else is always with me, nowadays it has a back seat, sort of like having your own Obi Wan Kenobe, who still says now and again, “Uh, you might not want to do that lady. . .” #bent #terilouisekelly http://www.open-bks.com/library/moderns/bent/about-book.html
