Apis mellifica (mellifera). II. The genus Apis is Latin for "bee", and mellifera comes from Latin melli- "honey" and ferre "to bear", hence, honey-bearing bee. Technically 'mellifica' refers to something that produces honey, as bees do, and 'mellifera' refers to bearing honey, as in nectar bearing flowers.
