Modern city life has been an inspiration for Sluijters in many of his paintings. He had painted dancers before, but from 1918 on he found new inspiration in the form of Gertrud Leistikow (1885-1948). Leistikow was a Polish dancer, who came to the Netherlands in 1918. She was an important promoter of Ausdruckstanz.
