According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine Sleep Paralysis is described as “For a few minutes a person is unable to speak or move as he or she falls asleep or wakes up. It also may involve the feeling of being unable to breathe.” Do you experience Sleep Paralysis? If so how would you describe it to someone who had never experienced it?
Misdiagnosis is very common. As narcolepsy shows differently at different stages in life, people were misdiagnosed with several different conditions. Some of the most common misdiagnosis are depression, insomia, and obstructive sleep apnea. In children with narcolepsy, some common misdiagnoses were ADHD, ODD, anxiety, obestity, and sleeping issues. #narcolepsy
Symptom- Automatic Behaviors
Individuals with narcolepsy may expirence temporary sleep episodes that can be very brief, lasting only seconds at a time. This happens most often are engaged in habitual activities such as typing or driving. They can not recall their actions, and often their performance is impaired. People tend to awaken from these episodes feeling refreshed, finding their drowsiness and fatigue gone. #narcolepsy #automaticbehaviors

Cataplexy only occurs when someone has narcolepsy type 1. Cataplexy is a sudden loss of voluntary muscle ton, usually triggered by strong emotions such as laughter, fear, anger, and stress. In about 10% of people with narcolepsy, cataplexy is the first symptom to appear. People can have only one or two cataplexy attacks while others have multiple in one day. Attacks can be mild or severe. During these attacks the person remains fully concious. #cataplexy #narcolepsytype1
Excessive Daytime Sleepiness
This symptom happens in both types of narcolepsy. Excessive daytime sleepiness is presistent sleepiness regardless of the amount of sleep an individual gets at night. Sleepiness in narcolepsy can be more like a "sleep attack" where an overwhelming sense of sleepiness comes on quickly and suddenly. #narcolepsy #daytimesleepiness #alwaystired
