Pastel Paintings by Rita Kirkman
Travel Sketch: Laura's pond across the street I'm in Naples staying with my friend Laura Pollak. Earlier this week, Nancy Nowak joined us and we painted this pond across the street from Laura's house. I hope you enjoy these progress pics of "Laura's Pond Across the Street" (pastel, 5x11-ish) I think it's on Pastel Premier, that gray tone they have.
"Seeking Social Sheep" (pastel, 30x40 inches) OK Y'all, here it is! I did decide to go with the tongue-twister title. I think it fits. I don't yet have the videos done, so sorry! I just had too many other things to do before leaving for Florida. this painting will be with me at the Naples Downtown Art Fair this weekend, March 25-26, 2023. Come see me and the rest of my artwork in booth 162 on 5th Ave between 4th and 5th Streets! https://www.naplesart.org/downtown-art-fair
Travel Sketch: Chicken I had a powerful impulse yesterday to use my pastels on one of the chicken photos I took when I arrived. This AirBnB in Winter Park are lovely people, with two cats, two dogs, two beehives, an exotic garden, and chickens! The light shone on one of the chickens beautifully when I was snapping with my phone on Friday. I was struck by how raptor-like her eye looked... just like a dinosaur! So yesterday I spread my supplies out on the kitchen table and painted her from my iPa
Speed Video of a Travel Sketch: Olive Oil and Vinegar I've been lazy on this trip and haven't been drawing each day, but its been nice to relax a bit. Today, after NOT being called off the wait list for the Winter Park Art Festival yesterday, I decided I should draw something. Still being in a lazy mood, I didn't go out in search of some plein air subject (besides its supposed to rain today.) Instead, this oil and vinegar at the AirBnB caught my eye. so I dug in to my recent @Jerry'sArtarama pu
"Piggy Pals" (pastel, 10x10 inches) I worked my gallery (Carriage House Gallery [https://www.carriagehousegallerytx.com/] in Boerne TX) on Wednesday and had volunteered to do a demo for the Boerne Art League. These are two of the piglets I photographed in January at Sandy Grove Ranch [https://m.facebook.com/sandygroveranch/]. This was by far the best shot! This painting is already in the van ready to go to Florida and hang in my booth in Naples [https://www.naplesart.org/downtown-art-fair] (and
"Rhythmic Wave" (8x16 inches.) from my photo, painted in Liz Haywood-Sullivan's gloriously challenging workshop in Austin last weekend! This painting will be going with me to Florida to help fill my art booth in Naples (and maybe Winter Park?) Painting 13-and-a-half? I might not attain my goal of 14 paintings this month 😱 Unless I pastel something small at today's VOS?... but I'm really stoked to get this one done, which probably WON'T happen in one evening! I can't recall if I ever did NOT reach a monthly painting goal... I don't think that's ever happened. Always a first time. But I wanted to give you this reason at least... and I think it's a good reason!
Painting 13 of 14: "Peek-a-Moo" (pastel, 30x30 inches) Whew! Done! I marathoned the finish of this one today. This painting will be going with me to Florida next month for a couple of art festivals (if it doesn't sell first.) I have continuous video of this painting too, but I needed to post this for my 13th painting of the month, so I didn't quite have time to clip out the best video parts for a speed vid or long GIF or something... I know I want to do something with the excellent footage, bu
Painting 12 of 14: "Curious and Curiouser" (pastel, 36x36 inches) Finally! This new large Texas Longhorn painting has been long overdue. But it's ready now to make the trip to Florida for a couple of art festivals; Winter Park (hopefully! #1 on wait list!) March 17-19, and Naples, March 25-26. This painting was also the reason why I did NOT want to set my goal this month at 28! 😅 To answer your unspoken question, I'd say this painting took me about 15 hours, over 4 or 5 days, not including t
Painting 8 of 14: "Rabbit, Ruminating" (pastel, 12x6 inches) available: https://www.ritakirkman.com/workszoom/5038470/rabbit-ruminating#/ The first pasteling from Tuesday's VOS! (Stay tuned for the second one tomorrow.) I had a lot of fun with the colors here, though it was mostly unintentional, I just had to go with the flow... He really has a Easter feel to him with his colors, but I decided to title him on his attitude instead.
Painting 7 of 14: "Little Blacky" (pastel, 6x6 inches) I don't want to spoil you on so many speed videos, but I couldn't resist the process of painting this piggy! This was another adorable piglet I photographed at Sandy Grove Ranch (@sandygroveranch) in Leesville Texas.
Painting 6 of 14: "Porky Piglet" (pastel, 6x6 inches) Isn't he so cute! This is one of the precious piggies I photographed at Sandy Grove Ranch (@sandygroveranch) in Leesville Texas last month. I was SO happy to find this little ranch when they had piglets. I have been very low on piglet pics forever, and have never had such a great opportunity to see them in bright sunlight like this. I visited Sandy Grove Ranch on a beautiful, chilly, sunny morning and the piggies were all out playing and cha
Painting 5 of 14: "Azure" (pastel, 6x6 inches) available: https://www.ritakirkman.com/workszoom/5031077/azure#/ I pasteled this Angus calf at my Carriage House Gallery on Wednesday, along with a piglet (coming soon!) It was a fun to paint mostly on the black primer again, as I do every once in a while. Enjoy this video slide show!
Painting 4 of 14: "Spot" (pastel, 6x6 inches) I was going to have tons of new paintings done by now, but Tuesday before the evening VOS, I had a day of.... (*scary screaming horror movie music!!*) ERRAND RUNNING!! 😱 Then Wednesday I worked my gallery. Luckily, Wednesdays are slow there and I got two new little paintings pasteled that I will post in the next couple days. Monday? I can't remember where Monday went.
